In the sacrament of Holy Orders, Christ continues the leadership ministry he entrusted to the apostles. Ordained ministers: bishops, priests, and deacons are called to proclaim and teach God’s word to all people, lead the Christian community in worship, and guide and govern God’s people by imitating Jesus’ model of humble service.
Your parish priest is available to discuss with you your vocation discernment. Please do not hesitate to contact him. For information on the priesthood contact the Diocesan Office of Vocations at 916-733-0258 or click here.

You must pray every single day, asking God to reveal His plan for you. Do not ask yourself, “What do I want to do with my life? This is the wrong question! Rather, you should be thinking and asking: “Jesus, what do You want me to do?” And listen for the answer! The primary focus of revelation is the heart. Listen with your heart! The discernment process in the priesthood must also include the Church. The local bishop is the one who ultimately decides who is and who is not called. He is assisted in this by the Vocation Office and the seminary. This whole process is called “discerning one’s vocation.”
Loving God, your Son, Jesus, has shown us that an open heart finds the way. Help me to find my way in this world. Keep my heart open to following Jesus’ way of serving others in love. Give me the courage to accept the guidance you offer me through my family, my friends, and my parish community. Through the Holy Spirit, you call me to a particular way of life. If it is the way of a priest, sister, brother or deacon, then help me to walk it in joyful service to your people. With you, my God, I know I can find my way. Amen.
